LATITUDES AND LONGITUDES (PART 1)
April 23,2020
Good morning ,boys !!
I hope you are ready with your SST textbook and notebook.
Remember:
The text in red will be the questions you need to answer in your notebook.
The text in blue is to be written as it is in your notebook.
Let's start our class now ✋
At the end of the lesson you will be able to:
- learn about imaginary lines and their usage
-identify some important latitudes
- understand and learn more about the term 'latitude'
Today, we will start with a new chapter 'Latitudes and Longitudes'
Look at the image of our Earth below 👇 What do you see?
Yes! We can see a number of lines that run from north to south and east to west on a globe. These are imaginary lines.
We use these imaginary lines to find the exact location of a place on a map or on a globe. These imaginary lines are lines of latitude and longitude.
Imaginary lines- Lines that run from north to south and east to west on a globe.
These imaginary lines are lines of latitude and longitude.
Today, let's learn more about lines of latitude.
Latitudes are imaginary lines that run from east to west. They encircle the Earth horizontally.
These lines are parallel and lie at an equal distance from one another. Hence, these are also known as parallels of latitude. (look at the image below)
The length of the latitudes increases as we move away from the poles, towards the center of the Earth.
There are 181 lines of latitude.
Now, look at the image below 👇Can you see the red line? That red line is dividing the Earth into 2 equal halves.
This red line is called the Equator.
The latitude which divides the Earth exactly at the center is the longest and is known as the Equator.
The Equator divides the Earth into two equal halves or hemispheres.
The hemisphere above the Equator is known as the northern hemisphere and the one below it is called southern hemisphere.
I hope you have written down the text written in blue as it is in your notebook.
Lines of latitudes are labelled in degrees.
The latitudes of the northern hemisphere are indicated as °N.
The latitudes of the southern hemisphere are indicated as °S.
The latitude of North Pole is 90 °N, and that of the South Pole is 90 °S.
The Equator is the 0 ° latitude.
Some important latitudes are:
Latitude Degree
- Equator 0°
- Tropic of Cancer 23½° N
- Tropic of Capricorn 23½° S
- Arctic Circle 66½° N
- Antarctic Circle 66½° S
Now, it's time to do some question-answers. Write today's date and the name of the chapter at the top.
Q1. What are latitudes?
Ans. Latitudes are imaginary lines that run from east to west. They encircle the Earth horizontally.
Q2.What are some of the important latitudes?

Latitude Degree
- Equator 0°
- Tropic of Cancer 23½° N
- Tropic of Capricorn 23½° S
