How was your journey round the earth ! Exciting or Adventurous ?
You must be wondering which journey ma'am is talking about !
A journey through the GLOBE!! Remember ?

Now let us continue our journey to different places with the help of MAPS!

Before we start, from this part of the lesson, you will be able to :
  • describe the use of maps.
  • identify different types of maps.
  • differentiate between a political and physical map.
  • understand the use of different signs and symbols.

A map is a drawing of different parts of the world on a flat surface or on paper.
➔A map shows specific details of areas.
➔A map is very convenient to carry in comparison to a globe..


Do you know what is a collection of maps bound together in a book is called?
It is called an ATLAS 

There are many types of maps such as Political Map, Physical Map and Different Thematic Maps 

1.A political map of a country shows political features such as:
   a. states 
   b. provinces
   c. capital cities
   d. major towns


2.A physical map shows landforms and water bodies like:
   a. mountains
   b. plains
   c. plateaus
   d. valleys
   e. rivers
   f. seas and oceans


3. A thematic map shows special features of a region like:
   a. distribution of rainfall 
   b. vegetation
   c. minerals
   d. industries,etc.


Q. Find out the difference between a map and a globe?

Can you identify this image? 
If yes, mention the name and importance of each colour in your notebook.


SIGNS AND SYMBOLS on a map are very important as they represent various features. These signs and symbols are also called as the conventional signs and symbols. They show:
  a. rivers
  b. roadways
  c.railways
  d. temples
  e. schools, etc.

Each map contains a key or a legend to help us understand the symbols used on that map.


So, now we have learnt about map and its types. Let us recall the topic by doing some questions:
