GLOBES AND MAPS (PART 1)

Good morning students!

Hope you are all ready with your SST textbook and notebook.

Remember:

The text in red will be the questions you need to answer in your notebook.

The text in blue is to be written as it is in your notebook.

The text in green will be the new words and facts to be written in the notebook.

Let's start our class now. Today, we will start with a new chapter 'Globes and Maps'

In this blog you will be able to:
*know more about the earth.
*understand the importance of a globe.
*define different geographical terms.

Now, look at the picture below:

Imagine you are at the sea side. You are watching a ship sail away. What do you see happening? What happens to the ship? 🤔

Think about it 💡and write your answer in the comment box below. Answer will be shared tomorrow.

Do you know?

During ancient times, people believed that the Earth was flat.

Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, sailed around the Earth and proved that it is round in shape. However, it is not a perfect round.

Let's watch this video which tells us how we know that Earth isn't flat:

Earth is round like an orange, bulging at the middle and slightly flat at the top and the bottom. (see the image below)

The region at the top of the Earth is the North Pole and at the bottom is the South Pole.

The extreme north and the extreme south points of the Earth are called the poles.

Now, let's learn about Globes.

You must have seen a globe. It is always mounted on an axle stand. (look at the image below)

A globe is a model of the Earth. The axle tilt is the same as tilt of the Earth's axis.

A globe accurately represents the distribution of continents and oceans on the Earth.

✧ What are some of the problems we face with a globe?

1. A globe does not show details of landforms, location of small towns and other such information.
2. Globes do not show the entire Earth at a time.
3. Larger globes are difficult to handle.
4. It is also difficult to carry globes around.

Now, take out your Sst notebook.
I hope you all have written down the text in blue colour above as it is in the notebook.
Time for some question- answers now. Let's start writing 😊
