scsvshsstclass5e(20.04)

Good Morning dear boys!☺
Hope you have completed the previous work and revised it too.
Before we move on to the next topic, let me test your previous knowledge.

Write the answers of these questions in the comment box below:
1. A map used to show landforms and water bodies___________
2. Icons and symbols used on a map to represent certain features_________
3.  Maps showing distribution of rainfall, vegetation, minerals etc.__________

Now let's move ahead! Today we will learn about various colours used on a map, directions and scale.

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to
  • state the colour used to depict various landforms on a map
  • list the four main directions and sub directions on a map.
  • define the term 'scale of a map'.
First let us understand about various COLOURS USED ON A MAP.
A map uses different colours to depict different landforms and water bodies.

               LANDFORMS                                  COLOURS USED
1. Plains                                                            Green
2. Deserts                                                         Yellow
3. Mountains                                                     Brown
4. Oceans and water bodies                                Blue

Now look at the map given below to understand how the colours are used on a map to show different physical features.

DIRECTIONS:
Directions are very important to study maps. They are used to correctly locate a place on a map.
There are four main directions on a map. They are north, south, east and west. There are four sub-directions on a map. They are

  • North -east- between north and east
  • South -east- between south and east
  • South-west - between south and west
  • North- west- between north and west

SCALE:   Have you seen a small ruler-like symbol in the lower right side of a map.?
This is called the scale of a map. It is the ratio between the distance on the map and the real distance on the ground. A scale is represented on the map as shown.

Now let's watch this video to understand these components of map- direction and scale with more clarity.

Now it's time for some written work.Take out your SSt notebook and continue the question answers:
C.W
