              LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE  (PART 2)

April 23,2020

A very good morning to you all !

Ready to continue with the lesson ! YES !

Before we move ahead ,we should recall what we've learnt yesterday.
*latitudes are imaginary lines that run from east to west
*equator, which divides the earth into two equal halves.

Now, today we will learn about Longitudes.

On completion of the topic, you will be able to:-
#define longitude
#identify main lines of longitudes
#know the difference between longitudes and latitudes

Remember:

The text in red will be the questions you need to answer in your notebook.

The text in blue is to be written as it is in your notebook.

The text in green will be the new words and facts to be written in the notebook.

LINES OF LONGITUDES

Longitudes are the imaginary lines that run from the North Pole to South Pole.
These lines are not parallel, but are of the same length.
All latitudes meet at the poles.
These lines widen on reaching the equator.

Let's have a look on what we have learnt just now:

I hope, now you can easily locate the longitudes on a map.
Meridian:
Longitudes are important indicators of time therefore, they are known as Meridians.
The most important longitude is the Prime Meridian.
It is a 0° meridian which passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich
near South London.

The Prime Meridian divides the Earth into two hemispheres-
1. the eastern hemisphere- indicated with °E
2. the western hemisphere- indicated with °W

Each hemisphere has 180 lines of longitudes, numbered from 0° to 180°, totaling to 360 lines.

Do you know the line which marks the difference between the eastern and the western hemispheres?

The International Date Line at 180° longitude, which is another important meridian.

Let's watch the video showing the difference between the longitudes and latitudes.

As we have completed with today's topic, we will move on to question and answers.
Copy down the work neatly and write it as Class Work.

Q.1 Define longitudes.
Answer:
Longitudes are the imaginary lines that run from the North Pole to South Pole. They are all of the same length.

Q.2 Differentiate between latitudes and longitudes.

Answer:
Latitudes
Longitudes
1. Latitudes run from east to west.
1. Longitudes run from north to south.
2. There are 181 lines of latitudes
2. There are 360 lines of longitudes
3. The largest latitude Equator divides the earth into northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere.
3. The longitude Prime Meridian divides the earth into eastern hemisphere and western hemisphere.
4. Latitudes are parallel and never meet each other.
4. Longitudes are not parallel and meet at poles.

Q.3 What is Prime Meridian?

Answer: The longitude that passes through the observation at Greenwich near London is the Prime
  Meridian numbered 0°

Q.4 State the importance of the International Date Line ?

Answer: The 180º longitude is also called the International Date Line. It is important because it marks the difference of date between the eastern and the western hemispheres.

H.W. - Revise the work done today. The next part of the chapter will be continued in the next class.
KEEP SMILING!!☺️
