CHAPTER 5 - CONTINENTS AND OCEANS

Congratulations!!! You have successfully completed the first chapter in S.St.
Before moving on to the next chapter we would like you to revise this chapter with the help of some written work. But before doing this, let us know that by studying this chapter, you are able to :
*define the terms continent and ocean.*locate and name the seven continents and five oceans on the world map.
*develop map skills.

d) Name the longest and the largest river in the world.
Answer: i) The longest river in the world is the Nile River.
ii) The largest river in the world, measured by the amount of water that flows down, Amazon River.

Answer: There are seven major continents and these are separated by large water bodies.

· Asia is the largest continent.
· It covers about one-third of the total land area of the earth.
· The continent lies in the Eastern Hemisphere.
· Asia is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by the Pacific Ocean and to the south by the Indian Ocean.
· Asia is separated from Europe by the Ural mountains on the west
· It has variety of land forms-for e.g: Mt Everest - the world’s highest peak
Dead Sea- world’s lowest point on land.
· Prominent countries of this continent are Japan, China and India
2. Africa
· Africa is the second largest continent after Asia.
· The Equator runs almost through the middle of the continent.
· Africa is bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the east by the Indian Ocean .
· The Sahara Desert, the world’s largest hot desert, is located in Africa.
· The world’s longest river, the Nile, flows through Africa.
· The highest peak of this continent is Mt Kilimanjaro.
· Prominent countries of this continent are South Africa and Egypt.
3. Europe
· Europe is the sixth largest and the most industrialized continent in the world.
· Europe is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south by the Mediterranean Sea.
· It is also known as the peninsula of peninsulas.
· Prominent countries of this continent are : The United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy.

· North America is the third largest continent of the world.
· It is linked to South America by a very narrow strip of land called the Isthmus of Panama.
· North America is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by the Pacific Ocean.
· The highest peak of this continent is Mt McKinley.
· Prominent countries of this continent are USA , Canada and Mexico.
5. South America
· South America is the fourth largest continent.
· The Andes, world’s longest mountain range, runs through its length from
north to south.

· It has the world’s highest waterfall , the Angel Falls.
· Prominent countries of this continent are Brazil and Argentina.
6. Australia
· Australia is the smallest continent that lies entirely in the Southern Hemisphere.
· It is surrounded on all sides by the oceans and seas.
· It has the world’s famous coral reef, The Great Barrier Reef..
· The highest peak of this continent is Mt Kosciuszko.
7. Antarctica
· Antarctica is the fifth largest and the coldest continent in the world.
· It is surrounded by the Indian, the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.
· The South Pole lies in the South Polar Region almost at the center of this continent and is permanently covered with thick ice.
· It is also known as the white continent or the frozen continent.
